chord = more than oneÊsingle-frequencyÊsound sounded simultaneously. envelope = the "shape" of a complex waveform or trace, (usually) considered as having four steps or stages, sometimes called sawtooth, square, sine, etc. fundamental = base tone or Êkeynote of a key. gamut = range (set) of related frequencies. keynote = fundamental of a key, can also be lead tone in a chord. overtone = harmonics of a fundamental sound usually in simple multiples of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.. of theÊfundamental. overtone series = series of overtones, harmonics. note = aÊsingle-frequencyÊsound. pitch = a relative frequency. scale = arithmetically related set or series of musical tones. signature = sometimes "vibration signature", is a trace of a waveform usually complex, sometimes calledÊsawtooth, square, sine, etc. spectra = frequency emissions or signature of some vibration source such as an element (atomic spectra). spectrum = a range of frequencies, usually related in some fashion, but not always. tone = same as a note but may also be a complex sound; i.e., composed of more than oneÊsingle-frequencyÊsound. trace = delineation of peak and/or trough amplitude of a waveform over time, usually done with an oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer. triad = three single-frequencyÊsounds sounded sequentially. triplet = three single-frequency sounds sounded simultaneously.
