Collected Articles Section: Functions of Numbers Table of Contents to this Topic |
A difficulty with numbers in music is they are not always numbers in an arithmetic format to be added, subtracted, etc. Numbers have different "functions" depending on what is being done. When referencing frequency these numbers are COUNTS, when as wavelengths they are PARTS. Then they can be arithmetized. Each function of the numbers has to be acknowledged and maintained. Another function is "label" and "proportion" as in Minor Third, Perfect Fourth, etc. Small wonder then there is so much confusion surrounding music theory. |
