"There is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things. For the reformer has enemies in all those who profit from the old order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new." Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince, 1515. How so very true. In my 20+ years of developing SVP I've been attacked by religionists (of all persuasions), scientists, health (disease) managers, musicians, philosophers, strangers, writers, friends and neighbors. Being aware of the slings and arrows Keely, Tesla, Ford and Russell suffered I was not disoriented (too much) by these attacks. And it is likewise true there is little support from those one is trying to help and who would benefit from the fruits of all the ill-compensated labor. People want to eat the cake but do not want to help bake it. People live in so much fear. If they only understood there is nothing to be afraid of they could transform their lives and communities with so little efforting on their part. But maybe that is what is so scary to them - transformation. They have their little psych niches mis-perceived as comfortable and the challenge of stepping out into an unknown (to them) realm is terrifying. Some who show some courage are the risk-taking entrepreneurs and investors who sometimes will risk their money but very rarely their comfort zones to achieve something new in their lives. Out of their risk-taking comes renovations of technologies and our societies. The changes only happen with courageous vision and action and not timidity of the sticks-in-the-mud, wet blankets and holier-than-thou pontificators. The few always carry the many even as the many stab them in the back, trip them up, hinder their progress, rob their money, steal their ideas, calumniate their reputations, forestall their efforts and generally do everything unimaginable to avoid change and abate their own mis-imagined and self-created fears. |
